Are Monk offers compatible with Shop Pay?
Shop Pay is an express checkout option that lets customers skip the regular checkout steps for a faster purchase. It can behave differently from a standard "Add to cart → Checkout" journey and this has a direct impact on the offers you've created in Monk. This guide covers how Shop Pay interacts with Monk at every stage of the order placement journey - product page, cart, and checkout - so you know exactly where offers will and won't apply and how to fix it.
This guide explains Shop Pay's impact in two parts:
Shop Pay on Product Page or Cart
Shop Pay at Checkout
Shop Pay on Product Page or Cart
Monk's offers on the product page and cart page (Volume Discount, Free Gift Auto Add, Free Gift Selection, Cross-Sell, Progress Bar, etc.) are triggered when a customer goes through the regular add to cart flow. Monk's code runs at the cart step and needs the cart to load in order to trigger the logic configured inside the app.
If a customer uses the "Buy with Shop Pay" button on your product page - instead of clicking "Add to cart" - they skip this flow entirely and go straight into an express checkout. Since the cart step never loads the way Monk expects, Monk's offer logic does not get triggered, and the customer will not receive the discount or free gift, even if they were otherwise eligible.
Example: You've set up a Volume Discount offer on your product page - "Buy 3, get 1 free." A customer adds 3 units and clicks "Buy with Shop Pay" directly from the product page. Because this skips the Add to cart step, the offer does not apply, and the customer checks out without the free gift.
How to solve this:
- The most reliable fix is to remove express checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Buy Now, PayPal, GPay, etc.) from your product page and cart and enable them at checkout, and keep only the regular "Add to cart" and "Checkout" buttons on pdp and cart. This way, all payment options - including Shop Pay - remain available for customers at the actual checkout step, where Monk's offers are unaffected. Monk is fully compatible with all payment methods (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay etc) at checkout.
- If you're on Shopify Plus, instead of removing the express checkout buttons, you can move your Monk offers from the product/cart to the checkout page instead. Checkout page offers work differently from product/cart page offers and are built to work correctly even when a customer uses Shop Pay. This is explained below.
Shop Pay at Checkout
If you're not on Shopify Plus, this section doesn't apply to you, as product and cart page offers require no changes here. Refer to the "Shop Pay on Product Page or Cart" section above to address Shop Pay's effect on your offers.
Because of Shopify restrictions on third-party apps, checkout page offers are only available on Shopify Plus stores, and they're added to your checkout using Monk app blocks inside Shopify's checkout editor. To setup offers at checkout, refer to How to set up a free gift discount code offer? (Shopify Plus)
Once your checkout page offer and its app block are set up, you also need to make sure the app block is set to display when a customer uses Shop Pay at checkout - otherwise, customers who check out with Shop Pay might face issues with the offers, even though it's live on your checkout.
How to enable Shop Pay for a checkout offer:
- Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize, and open the Checkout editor
- Click on the Monk app block you've added for your offer (for example, the Gift auto-add app block).
- With the app block selected, click on Checkout behaviour
- Enable the Shop Pay option
- Please make sure this is done for all Monk app blocks added at Checkout
- Save your changes.
Once this is enabled, the app block and the offer configured inside it will also display when a customer places the order through Shop Pay, in addition to the regular Shopify checkout.
